2020 deadline to move all public sector web addresses to uniform Gov.ie domain

03 Jan 2019 / Home Affairs Print

Gov.ie prototype switchover goes live within weeks

All government departments will shortly move to one trusted domain.

As the gov.ie prototype website transitions to full implementation, a Department of Public Expenditure and Reform spokeswoman has confirmed a 2020 deadline for the switchover.

Rollout

The rollout of the uniform gov.ie domain means that by 2020 every government department with have its website content live under the same domain, sweeping away the myriad of different web addresses that currently exist for public services online.

In tandem with the transition, staff training in the use of plain English is underway. All official content is also designed to be user-focused, the spokeswoman has confirmed.

The first department to transition to gov.ie is the Department of the Taoiseach and its content is currently being moved across to the new domain.

Department of the Taoiseach

It’s expected the Department of the Taoiseach will go live on gov.ie in the next few weeks.

Other departments will follow throughout 2019 with a 2020 deadline for every government department to have its website content on gov.ie

In tandem with the move to uniform domain, the rollout of MyGovID is accelerating.

This is a single online account which allows users access multiple services across departments, including driver licences, student grants, social welfare and taxation.

The spokeswoman said that the online verification processes meet the highest standards to ensure the protection of data.

Further services are being added continuously and those available can be checked on https://www.mygovid.ie/en-IE/WhatCanIUseItFor

Passport renewal

Some prominent services to be underpinned by MyGovID over the coming months include the online health portal, Agfood.ie and passport renewals.
