While 88,600 persons immigrated to Ireland in the twelve months to April 2019, 26,900 (30.4%) of these were returning Irish nationals.
Of the 54,900 people who emigrated from Ireland in the same period 29,000 (52.8%) were estimated to be Irish nationals.
Irish nationals experienced net outward migration of -2,100 persons, while net inward migration among non-Irish nationals was estimated to be +35,800 in the year to April 2019.
In April 2019, 622,700 non-Irish nationals were estimated to be resident in Ireland, accounting for 12.7% of the total population. This is an increase from 593,600 in April 2018.
The population of Dublin in April 2019 was estimated to be almost 1.4 million persons, or 28.4% of the total population.
Net migration
Statistician James Hegarty said: “The combined effect of positive net migration and sustained natural increase resulted in population growth of 64,500 (+1.3%) in the year to April 2019. This annual increase brings the population estimate to 4.92 million in April 2019.
“The number of immigrants to the State in the year to April 2019 is estimated to be 88,600, while the number of emigrants from the State over the same period is estimated at 54,900. These flows resulted in net inward migration for Ireland in the year to April 2019 of +33,700.
Natural increase
The number of births in the year to April 2019 was 61,200 while the number of deaths was 30,400, resulting in a natural increase of +30,800.
“In the year to April 2019, Irish nationals accounted for 26,900 (30.4%) of the 88,600 immigrants to Ireland and 29,000 (52.8%) of the 54,900 emigrants from Ireland.”
As a result, net outward migration of Irish nationals in 2019 was -2,100. This represents a decrease of 2,200 on 2018 when net inward migration of Irish nationals was estimated to be +100 persons.
In the year to April 2019, 61,700 non-Irish nationals arrived to live in Ireland and 25,900 non-Irish nationals emigrated abroad.
Therefore, net inward migration among non-Irish nationals remained strong and was estimated to be +35,800 in 2019.
All regions showed a population increase in the year to April 2019, ranging from 2,600 persons (0.5%) in the Mid-West to 25,100 persons (1.8%) in Dublin.
