Mainstreaming mediation in the Civil Justice System

Law Society Professional Training is running a seminar on mediation in the civil justice system next Thursday at the Green Hall in Blackhall Place.

The afternoon seminar, qualifies for 2.5 CPD points and is being run in conjunction with the Irish branch of Groupement Européen des Magistrats pour la Mediation (GEMME), the European association for judges interested in mediation.

GEMME’S Irish members believe that success of the Mediation Act 2017 will depend on the judiciary, lawyers and law teachers embracing its aims and ensuring mediation remains central to our civil justice system.

Integrated

Speakers will consider how the act has integrated mediation into our civil justice system, the possible impact of Brexit on ADR practice and whether this legislation marks a step change in litigation practice when compared to other jurisdictions.

The session will be chaired by Mr Justice Paul Gilligan and speakers include Mr Justice Peter Kelly, President of the High Court, Helen Kilroy, a partner at McCann FitzGerald in Dublin, where she specialises in commercial disputes, related advisory work and mediation.

Ombudsman

Financial services and pensions ombudsman Ger Deering will also be speaking. Ger has led a significant change programme since his 2015 appointment that has resulted in many more complaints against financial service providers being resolved through mediation.

Also in attendance is practicing mediator Andy Rogers of London firm CEDR, London and Diana Wallis from the School of Law and Politics at the University of Hull.

The seminar takes places from 4:30-7pm next Thursday with a discounted fee of €150 and a full cost of €176. You can book now through LSPT.
