More cash for recruitment at Garda oversight body
A plea for additional resource for the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) will result in an additional 42 staff for the policing oversight body.
The new hires will be five in the protected disclosures unit, 24 in investigations and casework operations, with 13 new arrivals in administration, including human resources, ICT, data protection and finance.
GSOC chair Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring (pictured) said the increased resources indicated “real political support for Garda oversight”.
She believes this will allow GSOC fulfil its statutory remit and meet the needs of the community.
Staff search
GSOC currently has a staff of 92 and will begin a staff search immediately.
GSOC received 13 protected disclosures in the first half of 2017, compared with 11 across the previous three years.
