Lawyer demands lab probe for faulty smear tests

A solicitor has called for a full probe into the errors surrounding smear tests in the Cervical Check controversy.

Cian O’Carroll has said that no on-site audit had been carried out of the labs used to examine smears under the screening programme.

O’Carroll pointed out that the Health Information and Quality Authority had not been brought in to examine the issue.

Family

Cian O’Carroll is the solicitor representing the family of the late Julie O’Reilly, who died last month of cervical cancer.

He said that the 60-year-old had “lost her life as a result of the way those slides were read”.

The solicitor believes that issues of alleged negligence can be settled in court, but there is a need to ensure that errors are investigated.
