Prestigious Brown-Mosten contest returns to Blackhall

The Law School at the Law Society is proudly hosting the prestigious Brown-Mosten International Client Consultation Competition (BMICCC) next April 2019.

Last held at Blackhall Place in 2012, the contest is open to the winners of national competitions.

It simulates an initial consultation with a new client in which two law students are presented with a client matter and are required to

  • elicit the relevant information from the client,
  • explore the client’s preferred outcomes,
  • outline the nature of the problem and
  • present the client with a means (or range of alternatives, if appropriate) for resolving the problem.

The role of client is played by an actor. A panel of judges – comprised of both lawyers and non-lawyers – oversees the consultation.

The theme for 2019 is theft.

The competition provides an exciting opportunity for law students to learn and practice the planning, analytical, interviewing and advising skills so vital in developing sound solicitor-client relationships.

The competition also provides a wonderful opportunity for valuable educational and cultural interchanges between students, law teachers and legal practitioners.

Trainee solicitors from the Law Society of Ireland Law School have a proud tradition of excelling in this prestigious competition having won it on three previous occasions - in 2007, 2014 and 2017.

National teams

It is anticipated that between 25 - 30 national teams from all corners of the world – Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia and Australasia – will travel to Dublin to participate.

The Law School has compiled a busy programme that sees participants engaging in a number of events in which they will learn from international and local experts and teachers.

Participants will interact on a social level with law students from around the world as well as compete for the honour of being world champions.

If you are a practitioner with experience of client interviewing and would like to volunteer your time to judge a round or two, please contact the Competition Organisers Jane Moffatt by email at j.moffatt@lawsociety.ieor Eveline Holmes at e.holmes@lawsociety.ie

There are four management and professional development CPD points available for judging a round.

Further information is available on the Law Society website.
