Probate Practice Masterclass: Getting your Grant First Time Every
Aim and Objectives
Too many practitioners are having their applications for grants rejected firstly for title reasons and then for other errors. The purpose of this masterclass is to highlight the most common reasons why applications are rejected on the grounds of title; the most common other errors and how to avoid them and get your grant through first time every time.
Included in this masterclass is the 7th Edition of the Law Society OUP Wills, Probate & Estates Manual due to be published in March 2022 which will form the core text for the Masterclass, a light lunch and eBooklet of materials.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this seminar/conference/workshop/masterclass participants will / will be able to:
- Understand the approach taken by the Probate Office in relation to applications for grants and draft their probate papers appropriately.
- Recognise the most common errors noted by the Probate Office and put systems in place in their own offices to avoid same.

Padraic Courtney, Secretary to the Probate, Administration & Trusts Committee, Dublin
Padraic Courtney qualified as a solicitor in 1994 and has worked for the Law Society’s Law School as a course manager, specialising in Probate and Taxation, for more than twenty five years. He holds the Law Society Diploma in Property Tax and is a registered Trust and Estate Practitioner and former Committee member of STEP Ireland. He is a member of the Law Society’s Mental Health & Capacity Task Force and secretary to the Law Society of Ireland Probate, Administration and Trusts Committee. He has lectured and tutored on Probate and Tax at PPC I and II levels, and has delivered seminars for CPD, the DSBA, STEP Ireland, and regional Bar Associations.

John Glennon, Probate Officer Dublin
John Glennon BL MBA is the High Court Probate Officer. He was appointed to that post in July of 2018. Other than a period of time spent working as Head of Administration in the Law Reform Commission he has spent his entire career working in various offices of the Supreme and High Court. He has worked on two occasions in the Central office of the High Court and has also worked in the Wards of Court Office, the Taxing Masters Office and the Probate Office. He has also worked as a full time Registrar in the High Court. Following the establishment of the Courts Service John was appointed as the first Personnel Officer and subsequently became the Director of Human Resources. In recent years he was appointed as Examiner of the High Court and more recently appointed Probate Officer. John also served as a member of the Courts Service Board in recent years. He was called to the Bar in 1988.
Anne Stephenson, Chairperson of the PAT Committee
Anne is a member of STEP, the Probate Committee of the Dublin Solicitors Bar Association, the Probate Administration and Trusts Committee of the Law Society of Ireland, and the Probate Liaison Committee. Anne has practised and taught law for more than 30 years. Anne lectures and tutors on the Law Society’s PPCI. Anne is a co-founder and vice president of Solicitors for the Elderly Ireland and is a co-author of three Oxford University Press books. In her practice, Anne has been retained by major financial institutions, private clients, and other professional legal and financial firms both within Ireland and overseas to provide advice and services in the areas of Wills, Trusts, Capital Taxes, Estate Planning, Probate, and the Administration of Estates.
Anne Heenan, Deputy Probate Officer
Rita Considine, County Registrar for Dublin
Rita is a former member of the Courts Service who then practiced at the bar in civil law with an emphasis on Chancery/Equity Law and Probate and Succession Law and all issues concerning Wards of Court, Enduring Powers of Attorney and law concerning persons under a legal disability. Rita lectured and tutored on Land and Probate matters for the Law Society and various Bar Associations and STEP and is now the County Registrar for Dublin.
