Instructing Counsel and GDPR

06/06/2019 09:19:08

The Law Society and The Bar of Ireland have agreed a Data Sharing Protocol.

The purpose of the Protocol is to provide guidelines for solicitors and barristers where the sharing of data (including personal data) between them is necessary for the provision of legal services. The Protocol can be found on the GDPR and Data Protection page of the website.

Solicitors may refer to it when instructing Counsel. Barristers will assume all solicitors who are members of the Law Society are complying with the Protocol unless it has been specifically agreed otherwise. Note the Protocol only applies to barristers who are members of The Bar of Ireland. If instructing a barrister who is not a member of The Bar of Ireland it cannot be assumed the barrister will comply with the Protocol.
