News

  • The Law Society has written to Paschal Donohoe, TD, Minister for Finance, regarding the General Scheme of the Central Bank (Individual Accountability Framework) Bill 2021. While supporting the IAR and the benefit from higher standards of behaviour within financial service firms, the Society has expressed concern that conflict could arise between the IAR Conduct Standards and legal professional privilege (“LPP”), and has asked that the Bill would provide clarity.   • A watchdog to regulate online services and clamp down on harmful content is provided for in a new Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill. Recruitment is to begin for an online safety commissioner. The commissioner will operate as part of a Media Commission that will be responsible for overseeing updated broadcasting regulations, as well as video on-demand services, and the new regulatory framework for online safety created by the bill.   • The Workplace Relations Commission has published decisions and recommendations from 1 to 15 December 2021. The disputes addressed cover allocation of overtime hours, selection for redundancy, suspension and investigation of a care worker, and more. View employment law updates

  • On 19 May, the In-house and Public Sector Committee and Law Society Skillnet will host the annual in-house Panel Discussion. Details, including the Brochure and Booking Form, will be available on the Society’s website in early March.
  • The Diploma Centre's LLM in Advanced Legal Practice is returning in a brand new partnership with Leeds Beckett University. This course offers the unique opportunity to use solicitor qualification as a building block to recognised academic qualifications. See course details
