Presented by Human Rights Committee of the Law Society of Ireland in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Law Society Professional Training, this lecture is aimed at all those who might have an interest in human rights, particularly from an ECHR perspective, and to gain an insight into the workings of the European Court of Human Rights.
Speaker: Michael O’Boyle, Special Adviser to the Government of Georgia on human rights issues
Michael O'Boyle, who was called to the Northern Ireland Bar in 1973, was Deputy Registrar in the European Court of Human Rights from 2006 until 2015. He has worked in both the former European Commission and Court of Human Rights and lectured in law in Queens University Belfast. In his work in Strasbourg he had been involved in many of the leading cases concerning derogation under the European Convention on Human Rights and terrorism.
He is the author of numerous publications and the co-author of a leading commentary on the law of the European Convention on Human Rights. Following his retirement in 2015 he has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Queens University Belfast and been made an honorary bencher of the Inns of Court of Northern Ireland. In June 2015 he was appointed a Special Adviser to the Government of Georgia on human rights issues on behalf of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
The lecture will be chaired by Mr Justice John Hedigan, Judge of the High Court.
