The Law Society of Ireland Skillnet, in partnership with Donegal Bar Association and Inishowen Bar Association, is hosting the North West General Practice Update 2015 event in the Solis Lough Eske Castle Hotel. It’s part of a nationwide programme of cluster events planned throughout the country this year.

Teri Kelly, Law Society of Ireland Director of Member Services, says, “Experts in topics such as family law, company law and employment law will deliver the very latest updates and developments in these areas, which have been identified by local solicitors as being of key importance in the Donegal market.”

Local perspective

Solicitor Brendan Twomey, principal of Falcarragh firm James P Sweeney & Co., is chairing the seminar. Mr Twomey says that the business that comes across a solicitor’s desk can often be an indication of the health of the local economy.

“The good news is we are seeing more buying and selling of homes, though this is at a more modest rate than larger urban areas. We are seeing the most activity in areas that are popular for holiday homes. We are certainly experiencing the recovery at a more modest pace, but we are seeing its effects.

Buyer beware

“What people need to be aware of is that the buying and selling of property has become much more complex in recent years – prospective purchasers must be aware of any potential issues that may be involved in house-buying post-recession. Most people would be aware of the many new charges that have come into force since the downturn, which certainly add a new level of complexity,” Mr Twomey cautioned.

“On top of this, it is more important than ever to talk to your solicitor early in the transaction, whether you are buying or selling a property. Issues around property titles are increasingly common, in my experience, and can take time to resolve. In order to minimise delays in property transactions, it is vital that a solicitor sees the title deeds at an early stage.”
