History of Blackhall Place

The historic premises of the Law Society stands on what was once a Norse settlement known as "Oxmanstown Green". The Duke of Ormond secured a Charter in 1670 to found a charitable school for boys of poor families, which was built in 1671. In 1968 the Kings Hospital School moved to new facilities in Palmerstown and some time later the building was bought by the Law Society.

To a great extent, responsibility for the existing building lies with Thomas Ivory, Master of the School of Architectural Drawing in the Dublin Society, although the building was never finished to Ivory's design. The uncompleted tower was removed and replaced by the present cupola designed by Robert J. Sterling in 1894.

Blackhall Place, where the building stands, is named after Sir Thomas Blackhall, chairman of the school building committee and Lord Mayor of Dublin 1769.

After substantial renovations, Blackhall Place was officially opened as the headquarters of the Law Society of Ireland, on 14th June, 1978.
