Social Outreach

The Society is involved in support of certain charitable endeavours, and also seeks to encourage law students and solicitors to participate in human rights and law reform initiatives.

Calcutta Run

The Law Society have supported the Calcutta Run since its inception in May, 1999. Originally aimed at the legal profession, the 10k Run has since grown in size (and popularity) with participants from all walks of life helping to raise money for charity. All monies raised go to GOAL projects in Calcutta and the Fr Peter McVerry Trust in Dublin, to keep homeless youngsters off the streets in both cities.

For more information, photos, and details of the next Run, visit www.calcutta.com

Human Rights

Since 2007, the Human Rights Committee has sponsored an annual Human Rights Essay Competition for all students of law, trainee solicitors and trainee barristers.

In December 2008, the Society celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by hosting an exhibition of artwork of over 160 young people from Ireland, aged from 12 to 16. The artwork addressed serious issues about human rights in Ireland and internationally. See the Gazette article from Jan/Feb 2009

Law Reform

Since 1999, the Law Reform Committee has sponsored an annual Law Reform Essay Prize, open to all undergraduate  and postgraduate students of law.

Arthur Cox Foundation

The Arthur Cox Foundation is a charitable trust, set up over forty years ago, as a memorial to the late Arthur Cox, solicitor. The Foundation’s funds have been used to assist the writing and publication of Irish legal textbooks and, in two cases, the development of electronic databases of Irish legal materials. See a list of previous projects.

Grants
The Arthur Cox Foundation Board, on behalf of the Law Society, trustee of the Foundation, adjudicates on applications and administers the funds of the Foundation. It provides funding to authors to carry out research and meet other costs of the preparation and publication of a text and normally requires recipients to refund the grants out of royalties. Grants are in the €2,000 to €5,000 range, though larger grants have been given, depending on the project.

How to apply
The Board welcomes applications from authors, and others involved in Irish legal research. Letters of application should be accompanied by a detailed project description to include content, costings and potential market. In the case of a textbook, a detailed table of contents and a sample chapter, other than the first, should also be provided.

Enquiries and applications should be sent to:
