The Diploma in Legal French, established in 1996, is provided jointly with the Alliance Française in Dublin. The diploma is a 9-month course, which takes place over the academic year as above culminating in the CCIP (Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris) exam, Diplôme de Française professional/juridique B2. (Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Course Objectives
This course aims to provide participants with a thorough grounding in French law and language so that those who complete the course will be in a position to deal with French-speaking lawyers and business people and/or with French legal matters in an English-speaking environment.
Course Structure
Taught by a native-French lawyer and lecturer, the course will contain both French law and language modules - the latter focusing on legal texts and vocabulary. The French law course is divided into four modules with workshops taking place towards the end of each module.
French Law
- Module One: Introduction to the French legal system and methods
- Module Two: Public Law to include Constitutional Law
- Module Three: Private Law
This module will be divided into three sub-modules: Law of obligations including contract law and the law of tort. Family law, business law including commercial law and company law
- Module Four:Other legal subjects
This module will be divided into several sub-modules including, but not limited to: employment law, criminal law and property law
French Language
The French language element of the course will focus primarily on the following:
Legal vocabulary, written and aural comprehension of legal material, written expression relevant to legal matters, grammar revision and preparation for the exam.
Who Should Attend
This course is appropriate for those who want to improve their knowledge of the French legal system or have previously studied French and want to enhance their career prospects. It is also relevant to those who wish to improve and/or develop their knowledge of French and have an interest in legal matters. It is open to participants who have a good standard of French. A pre-course assessment is available from Alliance Française.
Please note that due to the need for an ideal language-learning environment the number of enrolments is limited to 20. Early enrolment is therefore advised.
