Course objectives
This course is specifically designed to give students a thorough grounding in the law and practice of Information Technology and Intellectual Property, both extremely relevant areas of practice where there is an increased demand for specialised knowledge.  The Information Technology module aims to give students an overview of e-commerce, data protection and the key IT law concepts including aspects of drafting IT contracts. The remaining modules will examine legislation, case law and principles governing patents, copyright and designs including enforcement of rights, infringement and defences. There is a particular focus on trademarks to prepare those students who will take the State examination leading to the qualification of Trade Mark Agent. We will guide you on how to set up your iPad to operate as a ‘personal and professional information manager’.

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this diploma students will:

  • Understand the overall legal framework governing intellectual property and information technology.
  • Appreciate what can and cannot be patented, in order to advise clients of the protection they may require and be in a position to read and understand patent documentation and have an acute awareness of the basics of the patent filing systems in Ireland and at the EPO.
