Course outcomes
This diploma provides a comprehensive understanding of employment law, covering all aspects of the employer/employee relationship from recruitment through to termination.  The course emphasises a practical application of the law to ensure a compliant workplace and encourages an awareness of the importance of grounding all workplace policies and practices on fair procedures.  The course is designed to give a clear appreciation of the various forums available in which to seek redress and of the procedural requirements applicable in those fora.

We consider recent legislative and case law developments and we focus on practice areas relevant to the current economic downturn, for example, redundancies, unfair dismissals, employer insolvency and, finally, corporate restructuring and the Transfer of Undertakings Regulations.

Course structure
The course runs over six months and is divided into three modules:

  • Recruitment, contracts & employee policies
  • Workplace issues
  • Termination

All lectures will take place in the Education Centre in Blackhall Place. However to facilitate those students unable to attend Dublin on a weekly basis, lectures will also be webcast ‘live’ on our secure internet site.  This means that students can decide to attend the onsite lecture or, alternatively, to access the lecture online via the course website. In addition, lectures will be archived within the course website for the duration of the course and can be viewed at a later date on demand by all students.

Workshops
Workshops are an integral part of the course and aim to be hands on and consolidate what is dealt with in the lectures. This course will be webcast online however onsite attendance for workshops is strongly advised to maximize the learning experience.

Who should attend
This is an excellent opportunity for new and seasoned employment lawyers to gain a further academic qualification and enhance career opportunities in this dynamic and pervasive area.  This diploma is primarily aimed at solicitors, barristers and trainees but may also appeal to suitably qualified non-solicitors, such as, training managers and human resources professionals.  Please note, if you are not a qualified solicitor, trainee or barrister you must apply with a cover letter and curriculum vitae for approval in order to attend the course.

Lecturers & tutors
Our courses emphasise a practical ‘know how’ approach to the law. Our lecturers and tutors are drawn from members of the profession with significant practice expertise in this area.

Please note: If you are not a qualified solicitor, trainee or barrister – you must send a CV & cover letter for approval. Such applications are subject to a supplemental fee, which amounts to a supplement of €150 in respect of a diploma application and a supplement of €75 in respect of a certificate application.
